Resistance to high temperatures (also called « refractoriness »), high thermal inertia and insulating behaviour make refractory materials the best candidates to maintain heat inside a facility submitted to high temperature. Generally, the linings of a furnace are not constituted of only one quality of refractory material, but rather of an assembly of different layers of material – in the form of 2, 3 or even 4 layers – each appropriatly chosen so as to fulfil the chemical, mechanical and thermal requirements of the facility.
